Canada Passport Photo Requirements
IRCC 50×70 mm specs and the in-person photographer rule. Verified against canada.ca passport photos.
Written by the PixID.studio compliance team · October 2026
IRCC rule: a Canadian passport photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer. IRCC rejects photos made with software, filters, or AI. PixID is a 50×70 crop and head-height check, not a replacement for a studio sitting. Need a Canada visa digital file instead? Use Canada Visa photo.
What IRCC actually requires
Passport Canada returns the whole application if the photo fails. The format is larger than EU 35×45 mm. Head covering is for religious reasons only. A guarantor must sign the back of one print for many first-time adult and child applications.
- Software / AI / filters — IRCC rejects edited or app-generated faces.
- Not taken in person — commercial photographer or studio, not a selfie workflow sold as “compliant.”
- Wrong size — not exactly 50×70 mm or head outside 31–36 mm.
- Home print — must be photographic paper from a lab.
- Glasses, smile, shadows — classic biometric fails.
Crop check only · IRCC still requires a studio photographer
