Greece Passport Photo Requirements 2026 (myPhoto Digital)

Critical update — digital photos inside Greece (from 31 Jan 2026)

Hellenic Police / the National Passport Centre digitised supporting documents for passport issuance. For applications submitted within Greece, the facial photograph must go through the electronic service myPhoto on the gov.gr portal.

To keep the transition smooth, printed facial photographs were still accepted until 31 January 2026. After that date, treat paper prints as the wrong channel for a domestic Greek passport appointment.

The safe choice under deadline: book a studio that already uploads to myPhoto, or prepare a correctly sized digital file before you go. Do not experiment with a home inkjet print for a Greek passport office.

This is the same class of change Germany made with Biometriefoto digital transmission — different portal, same idea: the state wants a clean digital biometric file, not a drugstore strip.

What myPhoto actually is

myPhoto is not a casual “upload any selfie” portal. In practice:

1. A certified professional photographer uploads your digital photo (and often a signature image) to the state cloud.
2. You receive a code number / QR code (email or SMS).
3. You log in with TAXISnet credentials, link the files to your AFM, and authorise the passport service to retrieve them.

Official photographer FAQ: files must be JPEG/JPG, max 5 MB, face photo aspect 4:6, minimum 800×1200 pixels, ICAO Doc 9303 compliant. Unlinked files are purged quickly; files linked to your AFM are kept for a limited period (about one year per GSIS guidance).

PixID’s job is the composition and file rules — crop, light background, head size, 800×1200 export. A certified studio still owns the myPhoto upload step inside Greece.

Official photo specifications

Note the size trap: many EU passports and Schengen visas use 35×45 mm. Greece uses the taller 40×60 mm. A visa crop will fail framing checks even if the face looks fine.

Studio appointment vs preparing a file yourself

Inside Greece (domestic passport): the channel that counts is myPhoto. Ask the photographer explicitly: “Do you upload to myPhoto and give me a code/QR?” If they only hand you paper prints, that is the old process.

Before the appointment, a correctly framed digital file helps you spot problems early — hair over eyes, shadows on a light wall, head too small in a tall 40×60 frame. PixID is useful as that pre-check and as a file you can show the studio.

Outside Greece: many consular paths still want a digital upload or a photographic-paper print. Here the JPEG is the product you submit, not a code from a Greek studio.

Applying abroad (diaspora / consulate)

If you apply at a Greek consular authority outside Greece, official guidance allows:

• Upload through the MFA Digital Service for Electronic Management of Consular Applications, or
• A physical print on analog photographic paper (not a home inkjet/laser print), or
• On-site capture where the consulate has working photo equipment.

This is the path where a ready JPEG from PixID is most useful: correct 40×60 framing at 800×1200, under 5 MB, ready to upload or to send to a lab for photographic-paper prints. Greeks in the US, UK, Germany, Cyprus, and Australia often hit this route when renewing from abroad.

How to prepare a safe file with PixID

1. Open /idphoto → Greece Passport.
2. Upload a recent photo with even light and a plain light wall behind you.
3. PixID crops to 40×60 framing and exports 800×1200 JPEG (myPhoto minimum), without altering your face.
4. For consular upload: use that JPEG directly. For a domestic Greek appointment: take the file to a certified photographer who uploads to myPhoto, or use it as a pre-check of framing before the studio shoot.

What usually fails

• Wrong size — 35×45 Schengen crop instead of 40×60.
• Too few pixels — a 472×709 “300 DPI” export is below myPhoto’s 800×1200 floor.
• Paper print at a Greek passport office after the cutover — wrong channel inside Greece.
• Home inkjet print for consular paper route — photographic paper is required when prints are used.
• Shadows on face or background — especially from a window on one side.
• Glasses glare / smile / open mouth — standard ICAO rejects.
• Beautification filters — portals and studios treat retouching as a risk.
• White clothing blending into a light background — reduce contrast loss with a darker top.
