Passport Photo Rejected? Here Are the 14 Most Common Reasons (and How to Fix Each)

Thousands of passport photos are rejected every day. Most rejections come down to the same fixable issues; many can be resolved without taking a new photo. Verified against State Department photo requirements.

Passport photo rejected vs accepted — fix rejection and resubmit

Passport photo rejected? See the most common reasons and how to fix each — many without retaking.

If you already have a rejection notice, go straight to the reason that matches your notice — each has a specific fix.

The 14 Most Common Rejection Reasons

1. Background not plain white or off-white. Rejection wording: “Background is not plain white or off-white.” Why: grey walls, cream walls, shadows darkening the background. Fix without retaking: PixID can replace a non-compliant background with plain white if your face is clearly separated from the background. Fix by retaking: plain white wall, 2–3 feet away; overcast natural daylight.

2. Shadows on face or background. Rejection: “Photo has shadows on face or background” or “Uneven lighting.” Fix without retaking: PixID can remove background shadows; face shadows require a retake. Fix by retaking: face a window with indirect daylight; stand 2–3 feet from background; add a second light on the opposite side.

3. Eyes not fully open or not looking at camera. Fix: Retake only. Take multiple shots and review at full zoom.

4. Head tilted or not centered. Fix without retaking: PixID can correct minor head tilt and reposition the crop. Severe tilt requires a retake.

5. Glasses in the photo. Glasses have been prohibited since 2016. Fix: Retake without glasses.

6. Head covering. Exception: religious head coverings worn daily are permitted (signed statement may be required). Fix: Retake without the head covering unless it is religious.

7. Non-neutral expression — smiling or mouth open. Fix: Retake only. Relax your face, close your mouth.

8. Photo too dark or overexposed. Fix without retaking: Minor brightness issues can sometimes be corrected; upload to PixID to check. Fix by retaking: indirect natural daylight; avoid flash and dim indoor lighting.

9. Photo older than 6 months. Fix: Retake only.

10. Wrong photo size. Fix without retaking: PixID outputs exact dimensions for your document. Upload and download the correctly sized version.

11. Wrong file format or file size (digital). DS-160 requires JPEG only, under 240 KB. Fix without retaking: PixID outputs correct format and size for your application.

12. Photo printed on wrong paper or wrong DPI. Fix: Reprint using a photo lab or home printer with photo paper at 300 DPI minimum.

13. Photo edited, filtered, or AI-processed. Since January 2026 the State Department enforces zero tolerance for AI-processed photos (portrait mode, beauty mode, skin smoothing). Fix: Retake in standard camera mode with all AI and beauty features disabled. PixID does not apply AI face alteration.

14. Hair covering face or ears. Fix: Retake with hair away from forehead, eyebrows, and ears.

Which Rejection Reasons Need a Retake?

Retake required: glasses, expression, eyes not open, photo older than 6 months, head covering (non-religious), severe shadows on face.

Can often fix without retaking: background color, background shadows, file size, file format, photo dimensions, minor head tilt.

If unsure whether your photo can be fixed without a retake, upload it to PixID — we check every requirement and tell you what can be fixed and what needs a new photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common reasons passport photos get rejected?
The most common in 2026 are: AI editing or portrait mode detected (growing since January 2026 enforcement), shadows on face or background, wrong head size, non-neutral expression, and background not plain white.
Can I resubmit a passport photo after rejection?
Yes. For online portals (DS-160, online renewal) you re-upload immediately on the same screen — the application is not submitted until the photo passes. For mailed applications, your package is returned with a rejection notice and instructions for resubmission.
How long does it take to get a new passport photo after rejection?
PixID delivers a corrected digital photo in under 3 minutes. In-store services take 10–15 minutes. Once you have the corrected photo, online portals accept re-uploads immediately. Mailed applications require you to return the full package.
